According to online bookmakers SkyBet, Manchester City are the favourites to sign Liverpool midfielder Emre Can during the January transfer window.
What’s the word, then?
Well, the Germany international’s future at Anfield remains in doubt with his contract due to run out at the end of the season and with no progress on him signing a new one, and he will be free to talk to clubs from abroad in the New Year.
Juventus have been heavily linked with the 23-year-old throughout 2017 but despite that fact, SkyBet make Liverpool’s Premier League rivals Manchester City the 8/1 favourites to bring the midfielder to the Etihad in January.
Of course, Pep Guardiola’s men would have to pay a fee to sign Can when the transfer window reopens as they are an English club.
How has Can done this season?
The German probably hasn’t been as much of a regular in the starting XI as he would have liked despite making 18 appearances in all competitions.
The 23-year-old has come on as a substitute in two of Liverpool’s 14 Premier League matches so far this term, while he was an unused substitute in two more.
However, he has started four of their five Champions League group games to show what an important player he is, and can be in the future, for the Merseyside outfit.
Will he sign a new deal?
It’s difficult to say.
The fact that his contract expires in around six months is certainly a worry, and there just seems to be no sign that a deal will get done as things stand.
Can may well be interested in a move to Juventus, but Man City’s reported interest may be an interesting option for the Germany international if he would like to remain in the Premier League.
Would Liverpool sell to City in January?
They probably wouldn’t, no.
The Reds would probably rather keep Can until the end of the season and risk losing him for nothing rather than selling him to a direct rival, and if the 23-year-old is to leave Jurgen Klopp will probably prefer him to not join another Premier League side.
